Ralph Lauren remains king of the classics. With a show that opened to the musical score from PBS’ hit series, “Downton Abbey,” Lauren hinted toward his Victorian inspiration for fall ’12. Much of the boy-meets-girl plaid suiting looked sophisticated, even cool, paired with skinny-leg pants or, in contrast, wide-leg styles. Evening gowns looked refined and pretty in black and gold combinations, the best of which incorporated beading, feathers or deep V-backs. The footwear was decidedly elegant in the black and gold color pairing, too. Traditional silhouettes such as T-straps and Mary Jane pumps got a modern, dressed-up treatment with intricate gold metal and crystal heel adornments. Most romantic and eye-catching was this T-strap peep-toe style with a slight platform and beautifully crafted embellished heels. One could easily picture them on the likes of Lady Mary Grantham or a modern celebrity walking the red carpet.
